Hoonderts yard in Flushing has initially been established for the dismantling and recycling of ships, shipwrecks and offshore installations. These structures contain a diversity of hazardous materials and this requires extensive measures to prevent any negative environmental impact. One of these measures is a 35.000 m2 fluid tight floor with a separate sewerage system. Contamination of the soil is prevented in this way. The separate sewerage system allows full control over the rainwater and other substances that can be present on the surface. The collected water is monitored regularly and is discharged to a waste water treatment plant. In case of a spill the relevant sections of the sewerage system can be closed immediately.
The yard has a quay of 200 meters long that is sheltered from direct waves of the North Sea. The water depth at the quay side is LAT -7,5 meters increasing to LAT -11,5 meters LAT at 20 meters outside the quay. The yard is located in the Western Scheldt estuary, about 10 nm form the North Sea and has unrestricted access (no bridges etc.) to the open sea. The area is served by main highways and a railhead at about 3 km from the yard.
The total area of 35.000 m2 provides more than enough space for storage as well. The yard can facilitate storage of large structures for longer periods of time without interferences with projects in progress. This Intermediate storage capacity ensures that operations offshore can continue undisturbed.
The features makes the yard a multipurpose land sea interface that will not only serve dismantling projects but many other offshore related activities as well.
The most important yard features are:
- Fenced off area (35,000 m) fully paved with a high load fluid tight floor (intrusion of contaminants in the soil and groundwater is inhibited);
- Directly located at a sea harbor with an adjacent quay 200 long. Unrestricted access to and from the North Sea;
- Quay load capacity: 5 tons/m2 increasing to 10 tons/m2 at 10 m from quay's edge. The quay is suitable for RoRo operations of heavy structures like topsides and jackets
- Water depth at quayside at LAT: 7.5 meters water;
- Average tidal variance is approx. 4,5 meters (approx. 5,5 meters at spring tide conditions).
- Anchoring facilities (additional mooring points can be provided);
- Quay side suitable for the receipt and mooring of offshore barges;
- Equipment for loading, offloading, handling and cleaning;
- Calibrated weighbridge;
- Closed sewerage system. Full control over spillage and rainwater (zero discharge);
- Provisions preventing dust emissions (sprinkler devices);
- Storage facilities for hazardous materials and waste;
- Valid -environmental- licenses for all offshore related projects including dismantling, recycling, disposal, cleaning and storage of hazardous materials and waste.
